Of all the apprearances I will have, this one will sure be one that I will not forget. I was invited to attend a seminar by a good friend of mine, Brian Glenn. The people first organization is a self advocacy program that serves all disabilities and all ages. This organization helps people with disabilities get the support they need to attend school, as well as live and work in the community. The People First Organization was a pilot in helping get the name of the Dept. of Mental Retardation changed to the Dept. of Developmental Services (DDS). This new name was effectively changed on October 1, 2007.
I had a wonderful and meaningful time at this event. From the moment I walked into the Clarion Hotel, I felt like a movie star. Almost immediately I had a line of people wanting to take a picture with "Miss Bristol". It was amazing how much I meant to all of the people in attendence, most of whom are disabled members in our society. I was asked to give a speech, and like any good representative of the Miss America Organization, I thoroughly explained my job as a title holder and how I plan to change the perception of our "disabled" community. In my mind, there was nothing disabled about the people I met today. In fact, I would love to attend more events with them as they constantly kept me smiling, and enjoying life fully. I thank Brian Glenn for inviting me. It was such a memorable experience, and something I will forever cherish.
